JOB SUMMARY: This position is part of the Small Commercial Team's School of Commercial Underwriting (SCU) program. This full-time program consists of 5 months of classroom facilitation followed by 2 months of live work and practical application designed to prepare incumbents for a career in commercial lines underwriting. Associates in this role will complete all scheduled training activities outlined in the training plan and develop underwriting skills through class instruction and performance of the job responsibilities listed below. Upon successful completion of this program, participants will have the opportunity to be considered for a commercial underwriting position.
Hiring locations include: Sacramento, CA, Scottsdale AZ, Des Moines IA, Columbus OH, Harleysville PA, and Raleigh, NC.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: Underwriting Manager and/or Training Lead. No direct reports.
CORE JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Analyzes commercial risks for all lines of business in accordance with established underwriting policies, practices and standards.
Accepts, rejects, prices and retains risks in accordance with policies, practices, and standards. Authorizes the issuance of approved contracts and coverage; establishes coverage as needed after obtaining and documenting proper authority from the Quality Assurance Team.
Assists with the proper classification of risks to ensure the matching of price and product to the customer. Applies approved classification systems, rating plans and selection standards to determine eligibility, desirability and proper classification/pricing benchmarks.
Determines applicable policy contracts and forms.
Performs account analysis based on performance indicators, develops, implements and monitors action plans as appropriate while ensuring the quality of assigned work.
Enhance and maintain agency relationships with every interaction.Develop a better understanding of insurance operations and encourage profitable new production and retention.
Works cooperatively and builds strong working relationships with business partners to share and gather information necessary to complete work.
Communicates with agencies, processing areas and other underwriters to complete assigned work.
Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Education: Undergraduate degree preferred.
License/Certification/Designation: None. Associates must complete and pass a final evaluation in order to be considered for an underwriter role.
Experience: Insurance experience preferred. Will consider undergraduate degree in lieu of experience.
Knowledge: Standard business policies, practices and procedures. General understanding of basic analytical and financial techniques.
Skills/Competencies: Exceptional verbal and written communication skills that require interaction with all levels of internal and external business partners, such as sales, leadership and other underwriting team members. Ability to prioritize own work/time. Ability to use PC and learn/use applicable systems. Ability to work as part of a team.
